Candid conversations occurred as we brought together mentees and their mentor. This webinar on Tuesday 15 November was an opportunity to learn from individual mentees and ask questions of both mentees and mentor.

APM Mentoring Network is an established contact point for mentoring/reverse mentoring. This webinar provided an opportunity to hear from some of those who’ve met through this initiative.

Gemma and James gave their insights to their approach to a mentoring relationship, their perceived and actual benefits.

Sheilina hosted the discussion with Gemma and James; sharing our approaches, observations and learning across our mentoring relationships.

The focus for this webinar was on the mentee perspective, their preparation and intentions of mentoring. Sheilina supplemented this by sharing her mentor perspective.

Every interaction can provide opportunity for mentoring and reverse mentoring – by sharing our experiences we invited others to benefit from mentoring relationships.

We invited questions from everyone attending and gave candid and professional responses.

The premise upon which our relationships are built and sustained are ably summarised by Ms Maya Angelou: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Speakers

Gemma Drever has spent the majority of her career working within research science in the public sector space. Throughout her career she has delivered an array of projects, inclusive of system integration, discovery research and government lead initiatives.

Gemma currently works for a Biotech start-up delivering a range of projects relating to TCR immunotherapies. She is currently working on integrating industry standard project management throughout the organisation. Although a challenging endeavour, this role feeds into Gemma’s passion to learn and improve as it provides the opportunity to explore new approaches and tools.

 

James Butcher is currently a Section Commander (Project Lead) in the Parachute Regiment, transitioning to the private sector. James has worked across the globe, providing leadership and risk management in challenging situations.

James acquired APM training to help translate what he does in the military to a language that other sectors could understand in order to aid my transition to my next career. What he loves most about project management is taking on new team members; helping them develop and realise the importance of teamwork and collaboration.

Being adaptable is a key attribute to the success of the modern-day soldier and project manager alike.

 

Sheilina Somani, ChPP, RPP, FAPM, FHEA is an ethical, passionate, independent project management consultant with over 35 years of programme, project and product delivery and management. Sheilina has global experience, breadth and depth in coaching, teaching and facilitation across numerous business sectors.

A member of the inaugural group of Chartered Project Professionals (ChPP), current assessor and a member of APM’s Ethics Panel.

She is known for plain speaking; driving, leading, supporting people and projects to successful conclusions ... effectively delivering change.
