From 1 March 2025, Association for Project Management (APM) will begin operating independently alongside the International Project Management Association (IPMA), rather than as a Member Association and certification body, it has been announced.

This new chapter brings exciting possibilities for both organisations to advance individually and together, for the benefit of the project profession as a whole.

Commenting on the development, Milla Mazilu BEM, Chair of APM's Board, said: "For over five decades, APM has proudly collaborated with IPMA as a Member Association and certification body. As we've grown, matured and expanded our capabilities, we have identified a strategic opportunity to further strengthen the project profession and amplify our global impact.

"For APM, this enhances our ability to support projects globally. Our mission to advance the science, theory and practice of project management in the UK and internationally is more critical than ever. By focusing on our strategic goals and international ambitions, we will be better positioned to contribute to the global project landscape by growing our presence in new territories, increasing recognition of our qualifications and promoting Chartered Project Professional status as the global standard.

"While the structure of the relationship is changing, the spirit will remain the same and we remain committed to working together with IPMA and all professional bodies in the interest of the project profession.

"Those with APM qualifications can be assured their achievements will continue to hold prestige and value within the global project management community. Indeed, we expect the value of APM qualifications to grow further still as we expand internationally. People considering taking an APM qualification can still do so with confidence, as these will continue to be accessible in the UK and internationally. Although we will no longer offer IPMA qualifications as of this announcement, IPMA qualifications already awarded by APM will remain valid. Candidates seeking to re-certify will need to do so with an alternative IPMA certification body, however.

"This is a new chapter for APM and an exciting opportunity for the profession. We already have members and corporate partners in over 125 countries and this development will enable us to deliver even more impact internationally. We look forward to this new era of collaboration and working together with you, to deliver a better future for all."
