A unique award recognising projects or programmes that demonstrate progressive, diverse and innovative approaches to project practices and delivery.
We live and work in an ever-progressive world, which is why here at APM we value and encourage innovation in project management techniques and methods. We also recognise that new and exciting ideas for project management exist in every sector, for every type of project. That’s why all entries, across every category, will be automatically considered for this award, given at the discretion of our awards judges and Awards Steering Group.
In each existing entry, our judges will be looking for projects or programmes that demonstrate progressive, diverse and innovative approaches to project practices and delivery, including techniques, processes or methods, that have directly contributed to successful project outcomes.
Because all entries are automatically put forward for this award, there is no need to submit any additional material to ensure your entry is included. The judges will purely use stage one written submissions to choose their finalists and the winner, who will be announced on the night.
This submission describes an innovative and technology-based project combining the skills and experience of MIGSO-PCUBED, greyfly.ai and DHL.
Recent advancements have unlocked the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) capability to support data-driven decisions, to improve efficiency in project management and to improve project outcomes.
The Intelligent Project Prediction (IPP) platform uses advanced analytics and machine learning to predict project outcomes to enable better risk focus, to improve decision-making, and to enhance project management maturity.
Judges comments
We all have a lot to learn about the future impact of AI - and this submission has a lot to tell us about its successful implementation in Project Management. MIGSO-PCUBED showed they were at the cutting edge, using AI to deliver positive results in project reporting, and helping to predict performance without relying on PM instincts. This project’s innovative use of AI has made a demonstrable difference to effective project delivery in two specific areas – the quality of the data and the ability to manage budgets and prevent overspend. Building confidence in the robustness and value of AI and in addition, by reducing failures and wastage has made a significant contribution to sustainability.
Finalist | Daniel Armitage - Orano Limited
Dan Armitage has recently been appointed as Head of the Project Management Office at Orano Limited. Dan’s appointment is a direct reflection of the impact his Project Management expertise has had on our organisation and some of the UK’s most crucial nuclear programmes.
Dan has demonstrated an exemplary approach to project-managing large-scale technical programmes within the nuclear industry, which form the bedrock of Orano’s business in the UK.
Finalist | Flying through the hangar: Hawk MRO - BAE Systems
The RAF Valley Hawk team deployed Critical Chain PM methodology and behaviours; delivering a complex portfolio of Hawk Jet long-term maintenance projects faster and at a lower cost.
Critical Chain innovation focused on what is most important to service an aircraft more quickly; with shorter schedules, better understanding of scope, availability of parts, de-conflicting resources and daily recovery actions. A new planning tool provided simple information to move resources if required. They embraced lessons from the Hawk-Australia team, US Air Force, Boeing and BAE Systems’ PM Function. By increasing throughput, capacity was freed-up to accommodate new work, significantly increasing profit.
Finalist | SPEED - Network Rail
Responding to the Government’s Project SPEED challenge to ‘half the time and slash the cost’ of infrastructure project delivery, the rail industry came together to identify what drove cost, time and constraints.
Deploying agile methodology and sprint delivery, innovative SPEED principles and toolsets developed enhanced skillsets and empowered mindsets to enable cultural change, encouraging teams to be bold, challenge and think differently to create efficiencies.
SPEED has transformed how the industry works together to overcome barriers and significantly reduce the cost and time of enhancement project delivery, realising £1.5 billion of cost savings and multiple years in schedule efficiency.
Finalist | Support & Revenue Platform Programme - The National Trust
The National Trust’s Support & Revenue Platform Programme launched in October 2019, completed delivery, and closed June 2024.
Our membership system was end-of-life, heavily customised, and unfit to support membership growth and needs. We replaced the membership Customer Relationship Management system, bringing disparate fundraising activities onto the same platform. We also replaced our end-of-life data warehouse to consolidate data from multiple systems, improving insight into our supporter engagement.
The programme’s successful delivery has transformed the National Trust’s ability to deliver more for nature, history, and beauty through a sector-leading capability to attract, engage and involve supporters and the wider public.
