Sorrel Gilbert
Sorrel has had a varied career: managing events, exams and engineers. She embraces diverse roles.
At the age of 14, during her first event management internship, she realised that she enjoyed “developing teams” and “getting things done”. Subsequently, she sought out every opportunity to gain work experience; from internships, to jumping into a full-time events role for GirlGuiding UK straight out of school. This then lead to a portfolio career of short term, “one off” roles: from improving the exam invigilation process in a school, to creating halloween attractions at a stately home.
Sorrel was accepted onto BAE Systems’ acclaimed Project Management Apprenticeship Scheme (PMAS). There she found a name for what she had been doing: Project Management. This scheme gave Sorrel knowledge of the management of complex projects, such as the QEC Aircraft Carriers, and Type 26 frigates.
While volunteering with the APM, Sorrel has worked with the Governance SIG on their social media, attended STEM and careers events and has spoken at both the APM’s London and WiPM conferences. She was also on the steering group for the 2018 London conference.
Sorrel now runs Sorrel Project Solutions, doing a mix of project management and control roles, teaching, podcasting and coaching. She’s always happy to talk about project management, careers advice or do a bit of mentoring.
In her spare time, Sorrel is studying for an MSc in Systems Thinking and enjoys kittens, vintage cars and bicycles.
