Changes to the qualification structure We have made a number of important amendments to the qualification structure:
-
Risk Level 1 – the new exam will last one hour and consist of 60 multiple choice questions; this is a reduction from 100 questions in the current exam.
-
Risk Level 2 – the new exam will last 3¼ hours including 15 minutes allocated to allow candidates time to read a detailed case study.
-
Section A (100 marks) will be a compulsory section.
-
Section B (100 marks) will contain four questions, two of which are related to the case study. Candidates will be expected to answer any two of the four questions. This is a change from the existing syllabus which asks candidates to answer two from three questions over three hours.

Overview Risk management is a distinct and specific area within APM’s Body of Knowledge (316kb) and a key control function within any project or programme. APM offers Project Risk Certificates at levels 1 and 2, which are designed for project and programme managers who are involved in project risk management at any level.
Assessment outline The level 1 certificate is a multiple choice paper which is designed to determine an individual’s knowledge of project risk management. Obtaining this certificate is sufficient for an individual to contribute effectively towards the formal process of project risk management.
The level 2 certificate is a written examination designed to determine an individual’s capability in project risk management, sufficient to allow an individual to undertake formal project risk management.
What is assessed? The topics and subjects to be assessed in the risk management certificate examinations are detailed in the syllabus above.
