Award Winners 2009

The 2009 APM Project Management Award winners were announced at a glittering ceremony held at The Brewery, London, on 21st October.

Sir Monty Finniston Award - Tom Taylor HonFAPM

Programme of the year (sponsored by Program Framework) - Remploy Modernisation Programme, Remploy
Remploy's five-year plan is to increase the number of people helped from 5,000 to 20,000 a year and to keep within a budget of £555m.

It has achieved phase one of the plan, saving many millions of pounds by consolidating sites and now has a highly developed programme management capability for the next phase

Community Project of the Year - sponsored by Project magazine - Clitheroe Castle, Turner & Townsend
The restoration included the conversion of the 18th Century Steward’s House and outbuildings into a multi-purpose facility. Drawing these together is a new building link with a sedum roof, which was developed into a hub for the castle.
This building is structurally innovative, environmentally sustainable and contemporary in appearance. The landscaping has been significant and included a scheme to convert the old car park into a colourful and educational community area.

Overseas Project of the Year (sponsored by The Projects Group Ltd) - The Poinsettia Project, BG Trinidad & Tobago Limited
In 2005, work commenced on the design of “Poinsettia” offshore gas production facility to be located 60 kilometres off the North Coast of Trinidad. 

A striking aspect of this project was the empowerment of local industry to take on the challenge of building the 4,300 tonne gas platform, which was far larger than anything they had undertaken before.

Young Project Manager of the year (sponsored by PMProfessional Learning) - Michael Holme, MWH
Michael has been on secondment to United Utilities to undertake the cleaning of a total of 176km of water ring mains including the Manchester Ring Main – a significant challenge when you consider the absolute need to avoid discolouring any of the 560 million litres of water delivered each day, added to which it was first project of its kind in the UK.

Project of the Year (sponsored by Siemens) - PLUG Project, Olympic Delivery Authority
A groundbreaking project and was the first Olympic Park preparation project for the London 2012 Games. Just one effect has been to permanently transform the skyline of East London by removing 52 pylons, but the project also involved creating 12 kilometres of tunnels filled with 200km of power cabling.

International Relief and Development Project of the Year - sponsored by Project Manager Today magazine - Maguindanao Tuberculosis Control Project, Catholic Relief Services
This is a four-year partnership project for Catholic Relief Services and the Integrated Provincial Health Office, with funding assistance from the United States Agency for International Development. It aims to reduce TB stigma and TB morbidity and mortality through increased detection by upgrading health facilities and training health workers to become more responsive and effective at managing TB cases.

Project Management Company of the Year - Turner & Townsend

Sharing the diverse range of knowledge available, 1% of its turnover is invested in training and development.

Coaching and mentoring is promoted with discussions happening away from project environments. Likewise communication both up and down the project hierarchy is encouraged so all team members have involvement.

Project Manager of the Year – Kevin Bryson, Turner & Townsend
This was partly in recognition of his ability to deliver projects across a wide range of sectors, including, regeneration, education, business, law and order, laboratory and historic.  And partly due to his ability to modify his management approach according to the make up of the project team and stakeholders.

The BNFL Award - Project Directors’ Development Programme, Local Partnerships / UCL
At June 2009, there was some £8 billion of new investment underway in local government PFI and PPP projects.  For the long-term gain of those involved it is essential that project development and procurement processes are led effectively and efficiently by a strong project director.

This programme helps to impart that knowledge to the public sector.

The Herbert Walton award (best doctoral academic research): Ron Basu, Henley Business School

The Brian Willis (highest APMP exam mark): Rachel Bishop-Firth, Foster Wheeler.
